The following additional appointments to the new Ministry have been announced :—Sir William Vernon Harcourt becomes Secretary of State for the Home Department, and the Duke of Argyle fills the position of Lord President of the Council. Mr. G. J. Goschen and Lord Rosebery were offered, but declined, portfolios in the new Ministry. Mr. Gladstone experiences difficulty in the formation of a new Ministry, owing to some of the prominent Radicals having claimed portfolios.

Latest news from Afghanistan announces further fighting at Ghuzni. The hostile tribes are again assuming a threatening aspect, and General Stewart consequently attacked and dislodged them from the heights surrounding Ghuzni. The enemy have now retreated to the mountainous country beyond the city. Intelligence has also been received of the resumption of hostilities at Cabul. The Afghans attacked Generals Jenkins and Macpherson at Charisab, but, after heavy fighting, were repulsed with severe ' loss. The British loss during tho action was trilling.
