MANGAWAI RACES.

These races took place on the beach by the hotel on Boxing Day, and were well attended from the surrounding country. The preparations were complete, and the management all that could be desired. A more successful affair could scarcely have taken place. The following gentlemen were the prime movers and assistants in carrying out the programme :—Committee : Messrs. J. Lye, Pearson, Wilson, It. Boss, jun., and F. Smith. The general management of the races depended much on the energy displayed by Mr. Thomas Hall, who threw himself heart and soul into the matter. Ma.no aw at Cor.—Three entries, and a close run. Mr. Dibble's Nof M, 1. Mr. Moir's Salvator wa3, by mistake, too heavily weighted, he carrying ISlbs. over weight, but still he was within a length of the winner, and would have been the winner but for the error. Haswell's Young Wizard close up. Hack. Back. —Six entries. A clever win. Wilson's Gipsy, 1. Pony" Pace — Five entries. Won by Brown's Supplejack ; Guy Fawkes, 2. Trotting Match.—Won, as usual, by Mr. Parian's Boomerang, beating three others.

The Settlers' Race was a gift for N. or M., beating Ply and Salvator. Consolation Stakes was won by Harwell's Young Wizird, who had a walk over. There were £45 paid in prizes, and at the close of the race a.ll demands were immediately satisfied In conclusion, I ought to mention that the starter was most indefatigable studying and performing his official duties to the exclusion of his own enjoyment. A splendid dinner was served up by Mr. Wilson, at whieli about 100 were present. The festivities were kept up to the c'ose of the following day, when the company returned home, extremely satisfied with themselves and their entertainers. — [Own Correspondent]
