THAMES, Friday. The first day's races here were a great success. The horses from Waikato, Taranaki, Wanganui, Tauranga, Gisborne, and A-ucklancl, contested the local horses very successfully, but Auckland more so. There was a large attendance, and good fpart.
WAIWERA, Friday. Tho steamers Glcnelg and Rose Casey, with exouraioniats, left Auckland wh.irt for Waiwera about 10 a.m. A splendid race took place, which resulted iu a win for our local boat—ltose Casey. A tremendous crowd here has just gone off for dancing. Flags are flying, and everybody enjoying themselves.
CAMBRIDGE, Friday. Kutnours are afloat respecting Mr. Sheehan's coming to Cambridge. One is that ho is going to " make it hot" re land titles, as in Napier ; another, that he will join professionally tho firm of Whitaker and O'Neil, and unite with the "noble company of martyrs" at the coming Lands Court at Cambridge.
Mr. John Gwynnetb, sen., has accepted the appointment of engineer for the railway, and may be expected shortly.
The cricket match is put off in consequence of heavy rain. JN early everyone predicts a flood.
HAMILTON, Friday. To-day it rained heavily till past noon. The Hamilton East sports commenced at 1 p.m., and despite the showery weather there was a large number of spectators. There was a rumpus with the Light Infantry Band. The baud made arrangements a week ago, without asking the officers' consent, to co and play at tho Whatawhata races and ball, and leave of tho officers on Wednesday, and were refused. To-day half tha band mutinied, and went to Whatawhata contrary to orders, while the other half stopped aud played at tho Hamilton sports. [press association.] NEW FLYMOOTH, Friday. A meeting of Courtney's creditors was held on Wednesday, when in was decided to acwpl the deed of assignment filed. The liab li'ies show : Secured creditors, £30,096 ; unsecured, £11,517.
A Monnn, named Henrietta Macdonald, was found dead in the Huatoki River yesterii.y morning. It was supposed the woman was intoxicated. At the inquest today a verdict of "Found drowned" was return^-!.
A man was cut on the head with a quoit yesterday, and is not out of danger. The native chief Pomariki, who was takea to the hospital on Monday dangerously ill, died on Tuesday morning. He was suffering from fever, similar t» that prevalent at Parihaka, but be caught the infection from a native who visited the " prophet." WELLINGTON, Friday. The wet weather completely spoiled the holiday.
The athletic contest between Wellington and AVanganui took place, and the former won by one event. Wellington wins were : —Putting the Weight : Berry, 35ft. Gin. I ; Native, 2. Doctor bolceil. District Handicap : Doctor 1 ; Native, 2 ; Kensington, 3. There was a very large attendance, and the weather was beautiful. DUNEDIN, Friday. The weather was beautifully fine for theliolidavs. A serious accident took place at Waikouwaiti yesterday. A young man, saddler, of Port Chalmers, had hia arm shattered with a gun. Ho was out shooting, and in crossing a wire fence fall, and the gua went off. It is thought he will have to have his arm amputated.
