INVERCARGILL, Friday, A carnival, in aid of the fund of the local hospital and benevolent institution, was opened yesterday evening in Sloane'e Theatre. Mr. H. McCallock, R.M., president of the latter institution, opened the affair with some remarks appropriate to the oeeasiou. After the speech was over, a fair amount of business was done at the stalls, t&o takings totalling up to £150. The stalls were very prettily arranged, and the leading ladies of the town took an active intereet in their management. This afternoon the carnival continued, and to-night another large crowd assembled, notwithstanding the wet weather and the steady rain which has been falling all day.
