CORRESPONDENCE.
MR. MoDONALD'S LETTER, TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, —la last week's JSEWS appeared a remarkable production, from the pen of Mr. McDonald, of Pukekohe Valley. No "fellah " seems able to nnderstand the purport of it. Much of the letter is taken up by what has already been printed in the newspapers. It is already known that Mr. McDonald seconded Mr. Hobbs'a nomination ; and it was also known that a vote of confidence had been given to Messrs. Hamlin and Hobbs at the Pnkekohe meeting; for was there not a report sent, in which the writer jokingly termed Mr. McDonald a "veteran" politicianT What appears to have considerably nettled the Pnkekohe electors who attended the meeting, and voted for the motion of confidence, is the' insinuation contained in Mr. McDonald's letter that they had been "nobblerising," and, therefore, did not know what they were doing. It is true Mr. McDonald endeavonro to put the matter right, by Btating that tbey had not been guilty of any snch conduct; bat that is like setting np a man just to kock him down again. In these degenerate times, votes of thanks and of confidence are given to legislators not so much on account of certain principles they have carried out, or because they have consistently pursued » given policy, but beoanse certain sums of money have been obtained from the colonial chest for local objects. Pukekoho might well pass a vote of confidence, for bas not large sum been promised wherewith to make a grand trunk road through the district. And Mr. McDonald may well stroke the Franklin members on the back, for did he not extort from them a promise to get £1000 niore to make a respectable road of it T It is, of course, quite proper that these worthy Pukekoheans should hSfre roads, but then »hey should protest .ach Boribbierßllia.Mr. .ArcDo^d^— lam.
