TUAKAU.
I am sorry to have to report that our excellent schoolmaster, Mr. Hawkes, is leaving us. The inhabitants, generally, are sorry to part with him, but at the same time they feel some satisfaction in knowing he is not leaving to take another school, but to join the ministry of the Church of England. It is reported that his suocessor is to be a Mr. O'Donoghue, a gentleman of several years' experience, but not hitherto employed by the Board.. It is somewhat singular that he was the only applicant for a fine school, £IGO a-year salary, comfortable cottage, and nearly two acres of rich land. Surely if all this had been stated in the advertisement, many more would have applied. From what I can learn, the Board in corresponding with the school committee regarding the new teacher, have not sent any testimonials of that gentleman's, so that the committee are quito unable to form the slightest opinion as to his suitability for the office. Under all the circumstances our school committe would, in the opinion of many, have been quite justified in requesting the Board to advertise again, stating the salary. Some time ago a very numerously-signed petition was Bent to the Chief Postmaster asking for a money order office to be opened in the district. The following is the reply:—"Referring to your memorial, asking for tho establishment of a money-order and savings bank office in connection with the post-office at Tuakau, 1 am directed to inform you that, as circumstances do not appear to juatity a compliance with your request, the desired convenience cannot be granted at present." It is not for a correspondent to make comments of his own, otherwise I might hare something to say on the above. All I can say is, that the petition was for a money-order office only, and not for a savings-bank as well.—[Own Correspondent.. July I.] j
