DREADFUL ACCIDENT AT NEWTON.
At about 10 o'clock yesterday morning a young inau, or rather youth, named Edward $nrg<'iit, met with a druadful accident at tho Newton branch establishment of tho Auckland Timber Company's mills—Holdihip's saw-mills in West and Dublin-streets. The young man was working at the sash-machine, feeding into it. Hia left hand slipped, and was dragged in, under tho head of tho machine, where the fore part of the hand was crushed almost to a pulp. Tho other men in the mill hearing his crie* extricated him. .The attendance of Dr. I'urclias was procured, aud, after dressing the wound, the youth was, on his recommendation, taken to tab hospit.il. Uere it. was found necessary to amputate the hand, taking away all the fingers, aud leaving only tho thumb. Som-i ' friends of the uufortuuat-.i youth visited him at the hospital yesterday evening, ile. is, of course, stifforing gruac pain, but the opinion of the"m:Jica! gentlemen is that he is proceeding as well as possible.
