The charges in the Police Court against J. G. Kinross," G. B. Worgan, and F. Sutton will probably commence on Tuesday. Some difficulty may arise, aa Worgan is in prison at Wanganui, committed for torgerv, and the Crown lawyers do not seem clear about the power to move him before trial. This i? not expected. to stop the immediate prosecution of the case 3 against Kinros* acd Sutton. The case against Donnelly and Price, for defrauding Renata in a fictitious horae sale of two horses, comes first on Monday. WELLINGTON, Saturday. It has cot yet been decided by the Cabinet who is to succeed Mr. Smith, the late Assistant Undersecretary in tho Colonial -Secretary's Department. Jlr. Hugh Pollen, the chief clerk of the department, has so far undertaken the duty, and if promotion is to follow in the order of seniority in this branch of the pu 1 lie service, in all probability Mr. Pollen will be gazetted, aod permanently attached to this particular office. There is no hope whatever of Mr. Smith being reinstated in his position. Tue Government, I learn, amongst the measures which they intend bringing under the consideration of Parliament, will include a Colonial Licensing Bill, repealing all Provincial Acts now in force, aud having general application to all Licensing Courts and districts. Stringent clauses will be inserted with reference to th? grauting of licences in native district?. All sorts of rumours reach here as to the manner in which it is alleged the Ministry have erred in the matter of some Northern appointments. At one time it is about a lawyer, at another about a medical man, a2ain about an insurance position, and so on. It mav be pretty generally asserted that the advisers of Hi 3 Excellency, if inquiries are instituted in the House of Representatives about these things, can fully justify their action in all the directions indicated, and will be completely exonerated from perpetrating anything like "jobs " in the selections which :Ley felt the public service required.
