L.S- view of the approachiug ritle and carbine matches of the New Zealand Rifle Association, to bo held in Nelson, which will be conducted on conditions subject to regulations similar to those which used to govern the Colonial prize-firing, the members of the association determined to select the men to represent them by two competitive matches. It is intended, should sufficient funds be procured, to send three representatires of the rifl, branch of the Volunteer service and two of the carbine branch to represent Auckland, and the highest scorers in the two matches will of be course selected, but any other member of the association who ehoose3 can proceed to Nelson at his own expense, and will be entitled to compete in any or all of the matches, and it is probable that a team of ten or twelve may be on the ground as Auckland representatives. The first competitive match was fired at the Mount Eden rifle range on Saturday, and there were rather more than 20 competitors, representing both arms. For the rifles, Volunteer Allen, of the Engineers made the highest score, 4S, and Lieutenant Kelly, No. 3 Company, was next, with a score of 40. For the carbiues, Gunner A Payne, Artillery, made the highest total 47 points, an.l Gunner \V. Rose was next, with 46. The ranges, we may add, were 200 400, and 500 yards, five shots at each ranee' or a total of 15 shots. The second com petition will take place next Saturday.
