THE MATE <>F AN AUCKLAND VESSEL, DKOWNED. The Kate, from Poverty Bay, reports that her mate, John Blumer, a native of Stockholm, was washed overboard during a heavy N.W. gale on Fri iay last off Cape Palliser. The schooner was pooped by a heavy sea, which swept him over; another sea struck the vessel and smashed her boat into pieces. A life-buoy was thrown to the mate, but owing to tKe tremendous sea running, he failed to reach it, and was drowned. CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. -Turning the first sod of the South Rakaia and Ashburton Railway took place at Rakaia thi3 afternoon. A special train arrived from Christchurch, bringing a large number of visitors, and a number of settler* were also present from Ashburton and surrounding districts. The Christchurch party were met on the platform by school children carrying banners and evergreens. The Ashburton Bind was present. After the ceremony of turning the sod had been performed by Mr. Geo. Hart, chairman of directors, the party adjourned to luncheon, when speeches of the usual character were made. This will be the Hr3t private railway constructed under the Act. The length amounts to 22 miles. The contract, is for £5500; to be finished in 10 months. DUNEDIN, Tuesday. The question of the desirability of making provision for religious instruction of the young in public Echools has been disc'issed by the Synod, but nothing definite was resolved upon. The Cavcrsham Borough Council have agreed to Proudfoot's tramway proposals, but his concessions are to terminate at the same time as these for the City Hoard. The Governors of the High School have resolved, in conjunction with the Otago University, to obtain from Europe a teachcr of the French language. The Committee of the Otago Cricket Association to-day wrote to the City Council, complaining of the inadequate provision which exists in Dunediu for cricket. They suggested that an additional area of southern . recreation ground should be reclaimed. Mr. G. S. Cooper, on behalf of the Government, has written an explanatory letter to the Dunback Road Board, in regard to the prosecution of its chairman for making false returns. The Board has resolved to apply to tho Government to pay the coafc of defence. IN VE R C ARG ILL, Tuesday. The Waterworks Committee have decided to recommend the borrowing of £100,000 for the purpose of bringing in water from Dunsandel Creek for the supply of the town. The Mayor will be recommended to call a public meeting to take the opinion of ratepayers on tho subject.

To-day Messrs. Hunter and Nolan will hold their first sale of wool for the season, in their yards, Durham-street. The quantity brought forward is not very large, but the quality is fair, and there is a probability that a brisk competition will ensue. A concert is to be given in the Choral Hall, on the 2Sth inst., in aid of the St. Sepulchre's Parsonage Fund.
