CRICKET AND HOLIDAYS.
TO THE EDITOR. " Life Is real, life is earnest." Sir, —Without one word denunciatory of either holidays or cricket, both of which arc to a certain extent, good in themselves, J would still ask. is it right or wiße to miki business subservient to pleasure ? If teachem wish to make believe that educatioi. is of little or no value, they cannc do so more successfully than by giving holidays on the slightest possi ule pretext. For example, the Girls' High School opened on Thursday last, January 31, after six weeks' vacation. Then to-day, Thursday, February 7, a holiday—which means no lessons for two evenings—is given because of a cricket match, forsooth ! The banks, too, if you please, must close for the same important reason. Preposterous! What muffs out commercial men must be to allow sach in. terfcrence ,vith business !—I am, &c., Pitv the Poor Harmless Fellows ! February 7.
