The , Portland Island Lighthouse is situated ou the southern extremity of Portland Island, which lies cff the southern end of the Mahia Peninsula, Eairke's Hay, on the East Const of the North Island of New Zealand. The tower is 2$ feet in height, is built of timber and painted white. The light will be a second order revolving tvhite light, visible all around the horizon as far as the land will allow. It will attain its greatest brilliance every 30 seconis. The light u elevated 300 feet above the sea, and, allowing 15 feet for the height of the eye, will hi seen at a distance of about 24 nautic miles in clear weather, ami at lesser distances according to the state of the atmosphere. From tiie lower part of the tower a fixed red light, having an arc of about six degrees, will be shown in the direction of Bull Ilock, which bears .X.E. from the lighthouse, distant four miles. G.
