THE GOLDFIELDS.
[FKO3I OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT. J Thames, Wednesday. Moanataiari.—The low level cross-cut may be expected to cut No. 9 reef in the course of a few days at a point to the east of l>o. 2 winze and to the west of No. 1, with about 50 feet cf reef to drive upon before the slide intervene. The quartz as brought up from No. 1 winze has much improved in quality and size, and the country, both in the crosscut and winze, is similar to that obtained in the neighbourhood of the patch of gold on the SO feet level. The stopes on No. 0 reef from tho SO feet level, are only hall exhausted. The highest point in the middle stope is 53 feet, leaving 27 feet to break out to the tunnel level. The remainder of the block is more, as the stopes following each other leave a greater height to take down. The quality of the stone as taken from the rise to the tunnel level is good, and portends that tho block above tho tunnel level will be of similar value. Thia block is intact from the south side of the tunnel on the west of the cross cut to the 132 feet level, which will give backs of 40 feet to take out. An addition of gre-it value to the already large quantity avai'.able both from the SO feet and shortly from tho 150 feet level. The pipns for the conveyance of cornprcsseci nir to work. the patent rock drill at tho east end of the tunnel will be placed in position at once, and no time lost in making a start witTi tlie new power at the Thames. Cleaning out the reservoir preparatory to resuming the use of sea-water for the tables, is progressing well. The battery returns are favourable.
