HIGHWAY BOARD MEETINGS.

MOUNT EDE.W Tiif. annual meeting of the ratepayers of the Mount ISden Highway District was held last night, at the public school, corner of Mount Eden and Valley Roads. There was a gooil attendance, and Mr. Harper was called to the chair. —Mr. Udv, the secretary of the outgoing Board, read the balancesheet and report, as follows : — Receipts : Balance from previous year, CIO 7s S:1 ; rates collected, £171 1035 d; tolls (Mount Ivlen), £41G lis Od ; llo.id Board grant, I 145 lis; depasturing licences, £12; County subsidy, £65 iOs 2d ; contributions by residents, £i: 12s 4:1. Expenditure: Works in progress during last year, £49 5s (id : Three Kings, or southern end of Mount Kden road and crossroad to Raton's, £10 ; Mitchell's road, £0 19s ; Valley road, £31 19s 4d ; View road, £12 10s ; Water-street, £19 10s ; Mount Roskill road, £52 los 9d ; Mount Ivlcn road, £'71f> .'is ; day labour all over the district, £71 5s ; engineering, £19 10s ; printing, -to., and expenses of Assess mcnt • ourt, £43 17s (3d ; rent. £2 2s : leaving a debit balance of £152, to ir.oet which there arc three months subsidy duo to the Board, amounting to £111. The report said that the unsatisfactory financial position of the Board was due to the new Turnpike Act, which enables carters by one payment of toll to use the road all day. The report also referred to the state of the road between the Eden Vine Hotel and Kyber I'ass. The Board objected to accept any responsibility regarding this road, an it was outside their district. The Chairman moved the adoption of the report.—Some discussion ensued regarding works required, especially the road between Mount Albert and Mount Eden, which was pronounced disgraceful, and was bitterly complained of by Mr. Pace and others. —The report was then nnann.</rpnd to.— Mr. Lavers nronosed.

44 That the out-going Board—Messrs. Udy, Thompson, Shaw, Probert, and Hirst—be reelected trustees for the ensuing year. — Mr. Wilson seconded the motion. — Mr. Iledlcy was also proposed by Mr. Martin. Several others were proposed, but declined to stand. Mr. Udy and Mr. Thompson offered to retire, but this the meeting did not allow, .scrutineers were appointed, aud it was agreed that the poll should bo taken by show of hands. This resulted as follows :— Cdy, 43 ; Shaw, 42 ; Thompson, 37 ; Rrobert, 33; Hirst, 30; and Hedley 19. The old Board was therefore declared elected, amidst loud cheers.—Messrs. Laver3 and Bridgeman were appointed auditors, and Messrs. Crawford and Pace fence-viewers.— A discussion arose regarding the rat for the ensuing year. Rates of 9d, 6d, aud Is in the- £1 were proposed, and the rate of 9d in th« £1 was agreed to. —It was agreed, as a recommendation to the new Board, that they should make some fresh arrangements regarding the toll. The matter of the road between the Kden Vine Hotel ar.d Kyber Pass was also discussed. A motion was put that the Board do nothing towards that road under present circumstances, and an amend-im-nt was also proposed, that the subject be taken into consideration by the Board. It waa urged that the rates werecollected by theGrafton Road, Eden Terrace, and other Hoards.— Mr. Shaw said if they got the frontages included in the Mount Flden district, they would then make the road, and keep it in as good repair as Syinonds-street. Mr. ThompBon (the chairman of the Mount Eden Board), and Mr. Suiter (chairman of the I'deu Terrace Board), made explanations. The latter said that his Roard and the Grafton Road Board would pay half the cost if thi Mount Kden Board paid the ether halt. The motion was carried.—A vote of thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings.
