THE GOLDFIELDS.
[from our oo correspondent.]
Thames, Saturday. Piako. —Mr. W. Rowc has been elected a director in this company, vice Mr. John Murray, of' Auckland. Tho directory now consists of Messrs. J. L. Wilson, C.. J. Stone, J. Marbe, John Brown, and W. Ro'we. The retorting at the company's large mill ■will take place on Monday. Moan atai art.—The fortnight's workconsisted of three days' overhauling of boilers aud machinery, and nine days' crushing with 30 head stampers on the company's quartz, giving the good return of 7730z5. 17dwts. of gold. There is nothing important to chronicle in the mine. Sinking the No. 9 winze, is continued, and when . they are down 30. feet better class of stone may be expected. In the meantime the "whole reefa may be reckoned as good crushing dirt, exclusive of. any specimens that may bo obtained..' The tributes, Dunn and party, crushed twenty-ona loads at the company's battery," obtained from the Redan block, and realised 28ozs. melted gold. Qcee.v of tub May.—The fortnight's return is hardly equal to tho last, but is good, the patch of specimens coming most opportunely to tho rescue at tho end of the week. The battery return ib 3500z5. 17dwts. retorted gold. This has been obtained from 140 loads quartz.
City of London.—The quartz' forwarded to Bull's battery from the low level is shaping well for- H to 2ozs. to the ton, aud justifies the conclusion that tho company have got fairly through the poor strata of rock, which, at 19 feet below level, has completely altered in its character for the better, and promises well for the level now being suuk for. This will be attained.
Alburnia.—A considerable tonnage of first-class crushing stone is ready To send down to the mill, as well as specimens which are increasing daily. The company has in. hand as good a section of the specimen leader as at previous period, and the block now ready to take out from the intermediate to battery level alone will pay handsomely, besides the portion above that to tho surface, where the slide lies so much' flatter than below that the lengths of drive on reef will be much extended. As soon as Foster's tribute is out, probably in two months, the company will then have the whole of the specimeu lode in their own hands. On the off sido of the slide there is also a good strong reef, showing gold in places, which will bo resorted to by-aud-by. The slide itself is also being followed, in the expectation of meeting with the Love of Freedom reef, and as quartz is coming in from the hanging wall, the question will soou bo proved whether it is the reef expected or a portion of the specimen lode itself.
WAITEKAURI Company.—Areporfc received from Mr. E. Corbctt, the manager of the Waitekauri battery, states that since Thursday, the 19th, the date of last retorting, he has obtained a yield of sSsozs. of amalgam, treated with hot water, which he estimates will go oue-third gold, or rather more than ioz. of gold : to the ton, from the plates, ripples, and berdans. He also reports 'that the contractors are getting on well with the tramway extension. No. 1 section w ill be finished in a week's time. Owing to the continued dry weather, water is becoming somewhat scarce, and Mr. Corbett states he has had to stop four berdans aud eight head of stampers. The mine manager's report states that' the drive to the north from the winze in the 160 feet level is in 60 feet, and to the south 5S feet. He is taking down eight feet of the reef, and the stone shows gold. The leading stope north is 15 feet from the winze, and the reef is 17 feet in width, Eliowing gold freely ; also the leading stope south is 25 feet from the winze, and the reef IS feet in width, the stone still showing gold. Driving is still going on ill the lower level, 'and the reef looking well.
Welcome (Waitekauri).—The manager, Mr. Lowe, besides sinking the winze to connect the upper and lower levels, is now putting in a drive in the lower level to connect with the winze, when the latter is down deep enough. The winze is down a trifle over 20 feet, and as the perpendicular distance between the two levels is 40 feet, it may be said that half the distance is Buuk. Gold is showing more or less in all the leaders, but especially in the No. 4 cross reef, where the quartz is heavily charged with minerals, and is 18 inches wide. The general appearance of the mine is good, and with the completion of the tramway the mine ought to become a valuable property. Canadian. —Moyle, working claim in Canadian Gully, Moanataiari Creek, obtained 201bs. specimens, which produced at Bull's battery 7ozs. 19dwts. melted gold. Caledonian Tributes.— Heravel and party crushed 30 tons at Bull's battery, for ISozs. melted gold ; and Mclnncs and party crushcd 6i tons stone, for Glozs. ldwt. melted gold.
