SCEPTICAL AND "J. C."
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I perceive in your Saturday's issue that "J. C." has fallen headlong into the slough again. He appears to be a man that don't do things by halves ; the whole length or none seems to be his motto. But I have this consolation, that I did not push him into the slongh,—he fell in himself. He is a most extraordinary man, and he has a most extraordinary dictionary, which defines sceptical aB doubting everything. If this is correct, I would advise him to put it by and buy a better. His belief also is most extraordinary, but the moat extraordinary thing of all is that he has read the old philosophers for 50 years and not become more enlightened. " 'Tis pitiful, wondrous pitiful," and he is not a learner, yet he asks me the following question, " Where does ' Sceptical' know anything about God but from the Bible ?" But for this his letter is beneath notice, and this question a child in knowledge should be able to answer. It only shews what education has been and what it requires to be. And then he flies to the old subterfuge of the ignorant when they have no argument., and says, "lam sorry for you." I hope-he requires no physic to support such a sorrow. Now to the question, —Has "J. C." never reflected on the nniverse in which he exists? Has he fcrgot the sun and the other grand stars, the moon, the earth, and all the other planets? Has he forgotten himself and his wonderful structure ? Does any book in the world create in us such feelings as the contemplation of these things ? Oh, fie! "J. C." again fie! Was the Bible printed for Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, for the.twelve, patriarchs, and a host of others could' name, or did they" get their knowledge of God from some other source ? My dear " J. C." you must be an illusion to yourself. Since lifo begun, Has Jolly ceased in men from aire to son ? So ever-fresh illusions will arise And lord creation until men are wise. —I am, &c., Sceptical.
