THE GOLDFIELDS.

[from our own correspondent.]

Thames, Saturday. The Waiotahi have cleaned up their month's work with 60 ounces retorted gold from SO tons. • '. Red Queen.—The gold lodged in the bank by the company's men -was reduced 14dw ts. in weight, making the proceeds for the month's operations " (independent of the tributes, two parties of whom have abandoned their sections, and two are continuing) 48 ounces 2 dwts melted gold. The portion of the mine worked by . mine manager; (Macabe and party) is. on the.3oo feet level froji the old shaft, and the stone obtained from several small veins or broken up leaders,' varying in size from one to two inches, is comparatively small, but the 1601b. speci- ; mens, yielding the return, has been from the output of some 8 tons, which will be augmented before the general crushing takes place. From the results of the last month's,' work by tributers and company's men, the! managerhasnow called for tenders, receivable till Tuesday, to drive upon No. 6 reef fromthe Caledonian level into the Red Qneen ground, when operations will prove that part of the Company's ground. ■" "■'■ .- , . Golden Age.—Nolan and party (tributers), lodged in the bank llozs. lOdwts. 12gr3. gold, the result of a small crushing. Red, White, and Blue.—The tributers, Green and party, crushed 401bs. choice stone for the yield of Bozs. 14dwts. melted gold. Morning Stab.—Brown and party, tributers, crushed 35 tons at the company's mill, and obtained 16ozs. 7dwts. melted gold.

Seventeenth March.—The shareholders, Moore and party, crushed 1 ton at the Prince Alfred mill, and realised 4ozs. 15dwts. 6grs. melted gold. Alburnta.—The contractors in the main level are now reduced to fonr men only, from the cause of the non-supply of water. The mill being now dependent upon casual rainfall. The lode is continuing well defined about two feet thick, and, from the appearance of the country, it is'likely to continue to the western boundary. Thirty tons from this lode are now in battery, but no more will be sent in, owing to the inability to crush the same, but will be sent down to the Whau level, and thence to the flat for treatment, and the supply is quite equal to requirements at the mill. The two new berdans are now in operation, and will, doubtless, add to the next cleaning-up an additional number of ounces.

Alburxia (Tribute No. 3). —This tribute, worked by Allan and party, crushed at the Moanatairi battery, in place of the company's own mill up the creek, now thrown out of work for the want of water consequent upon the breaking down of the Moanatairi Water Supply Company's fluming, the repairing of which seems to be doubtful, and, from the picked stuff milled, obtained 14ozs. I2dwts. of gold.

Little Ao> t es (Tararu). —The fortnight's run of 15 stampers, at the Missouri batter;', has netted to the shareholders—Taylor and party—243ozs. of melted gold in the ratio of lS2ozs. lOdwts. first-class to GOozs, lOdwts. second-class gold. During the commencement of the present crushing, aportionjof the all of the reef left standing in the drive, was broken down and milled (being the poorest portion of the reef), but, owing to the nature of the ground, it has now been found expedient to leave a portion of the hanging-wall for security. Driving on the reef, the width of the drive is taken out, and in places the footwall widens out to five and six feefc. Stoping is continued. Waio-Karaka Drainage.—The operations in the Crown Princess have proved that by baling out with tanks they have reduced the water to the well-hold of that mine, and also have reduced the water in the Bright Smile and Queen of Beauty shafts by six inches, according to measurements taken by the Mining Inspector on Friday. Baling out continued till Saturday, and the water has been further reduced. On Saturday morning the tanks have discontinued, and from good authority the water (Saturday afternoon) is over the flat sheet of the bottom level several inches, shewing that, without uninterrupted application, the water will come up again till its source is exhausted.
