CURIOUS PROCEEDING.
To the Editor of the Herald. Sib, —A few weeks ago I lost a valuable Gordon setter, a well-trained sporting dog. ; After making a diligent inquiry, I learned ; that " a dog," without any description being i given, w?3 advertised as "found," in the ' Evening Star. I went to the Star for the 3 address of the party, bat was unable to get: < it, a3 he had failed to leave it. With diffi- 3 culty X discovered his residence in "Welling-ton-street, where X called; and although the dog recognised me as its master, I was dis- i tinctly refused possession. Consequently, I c instructed Mr. Joy to take proceedings. ] This was done; but before the case was 1 called by the Court, Mr. Alexander, who ; acted for the defendant, proposed a compromise, to the effect that his client should pay i the cests and return the dog. Mr. Joy, I with his usual courtesy, accepted the propo- < sition, to which I agreed. Now for the worst ( part of it. This arrangement was carried ( out only so far as the costs were concerned. To my horror and dis just, when I two hours afterwards applied for my dog, I found him lying stark dead. I immediately directed a veterinary surgeon to make examination to discover trices" of " poison or violence. The ■ stomach was analysed Tunny, but no .traces of .poison .appeared. The lungs Were, ' however, The dog had. .been vomiting "violently, and doubtlesa got nd oi sufficient' evidence of rwhatever poison, i| any, him., How,..sir, I believe you wiUagreo/with me that "mine is a very Hard case. I have logt a valuable dog, and
xr j have been put to expense and inconvenience, s, j simply because my dog followed a stranger, it 1 In conclusion, I bee distinctly to state that »r j the man who had the dog, told me I should in j never have my dog again. ; ' Too faithfully Jbe> jo j kept his word, for the dog is'dead.
