The schooner Mary Melville will leave this morning for Russell, in ballast. The p.s. Manaia is about to loavo for Napier, where she has boen purchased. She has cleared at the Customs. A barquo was signalled yestorday afternoon. f*he will probably prove to be the Glimpse, from Newcastle, with a cargo of coal. She left on the 7th inst. The schooner Transit has cleared at the Customs for Dunedin, with a cargo of timber. She loaves at once. The schooner Wave of Life, Captain McClellan, arrived yesterday morning from Sydney, with a General cargo. She left on the 20th ult., and has had a succession of contrary winds to port. The weather which during the past few days has given signs of breaking yesterday shifted to tho N. W. and blow hard throughout the day. Towards five o'clock tbe.wiud shifted to the south-west and moderated, and shortly after tho sea, which had ran hi.-h, went down. Lively times were experienced by the shipping. The brig Jane was the only vessel moored on the western si£e of tho wharf, and came in for a deal of hammering. It is to be regretted th*t Captain Chamberlain's prognostications of bad weather were littlo heeded on the previous day when he requested the harbour peopto to shift his vessel into a vacant berth offering greater security. The ship Merwa"jee Framjee, anchored down the harbour, dragged her anchor considerably and d/ifted i- to Orakei Bay, where it was reported yesterday afternoon she had grounded. She was, liowe.ver, afloat throughout the blow, and a shift of wind occurring to the south-west, advantago was taken to set mizaen topsail and spanker, and she soon after took up a better position and securer anchorage. Other vessels were made snug, and rodo out the gale in safety.
