EDUCATIONAL MATTERS AT PUKEKOHE.
To the Editor, of. the Herald. Sir, —Will you afford me apace in your columns to make a few remarks upon the manner in which a non-certificated teacher has been foisted into the school in this district ? . During, the last three years our school Was in charge of a teacher holding no certificate of qualification from the Board, 'and this, in a school where the attendance numbers, upwards- of one hundred pupils. •During! the last Christmas holidays he left the, district., , No, one. so. far as I am aware knew anything of his leaving. His exit, and .the appointment of. his.successor were.condiicted; by.-some sleight of hand prooeaj known onlyto the. initiated. It is.concerning the appointment I intend to apeak. ; Towards the ,_end of the year; our School Cow.-' jmittee resigned ..in.,consequence of .internal dissensions , among, its members. , When the-' school; opened in January,. in .charge of the assistant teacher, the secretary ■to.;, the Board of Education appointed oomimissionera to./act in .place, of a committee, ;although, we_ s thought ; ,it. strange that,he should do bo instead of. advertising, a school meeting to.be. held in' January, in accordance jWith.tne School Act, when the settlers wouM : havehad an opportunity.of electing a com- . mittee. „; These.commissioners advertised /or a;.teacher, and",.received ten applications. Some of the applicants hold first-class certi--.ficates from: the Board of .Education, .beeideo ."furnishing Jtestimonials which, inconteatibly ! proveithem_to,be. efficient fchers:;<i all) thißi:ia-.admitted. byi the ooom'missioners ; yet;they. appoint.aman; holding •no; certificate -of qualification, and;.what>iio ..they advance 1 /thatfitheißoardls Inspector,-. are informed that the Board haa granted one fcßndred and sixty pounds to build a teacher a re«idence, with a request from the Board thjt this sum should be supplemented by twenty pounds from the settlers of the district as it was intended to erect a dwelling consisting of six apartments. The commissioners called a meeting of the settlers far the purpose of raising the twenty pounds. At the meeting the modus operandi of appointing the teacher leaked out, when instead of money they received very decided left-handed compliments accompanied with a" request that they should resign. Now, Mr. Editor, is the above not a nice little job on. a Bmall scale.—l am, &c, Settler.". Pukekohe West, February, 1576.
