VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.
CARBINE DISTRICT FIRING. The Carbiue District Firing was commenced at the Mount Eden range yesterday morning, under the superintendence of Major Gordon, assisted by Bugler Lee. The men were divided into two squads, one of which started firing at 7 a.m., aud the_ other at 9 a.m. The result of the competition was in favour of Volunteer Rose, of the Artillery. We may mention that this branch of the force has taken no less than seven of the prizes contested for, a state of things which the Cavalry should strive to alter by practising more frequently than they at present do. The scores made are as follow : —. 200 300 500, yils. yds. yds. Tl. Vol. Rose, -AttPJery .. .. 30 14 22 52 Sergt. Anscll, Aitillcry .. 13 17 12 47 Vol. Ponce. The meeting of Volunteer officers, Tvh'eh •was to have i)een held last night, in the Drill-shed, to consider the advisability o£ accepting or otherwise the challenge to a rifle competition thrown out by the Thames Volunteers to their Auckland brethren-in-arms, lapsed through a sufficient number of persons not being present. The only officers who put in an appearance at the place of assignation were Captain Derrom, Lieutenant jfahon, aud Sub-Lieutenant Skinner (Victoria Co.), Lieutenant Clifton (Hobaon Co.), ami Lieutenant Payne (Artillery Co.). The inclement weather which prevailed was doubtless the cause of such a poor attendance. The meeting of the best shots of the district, which had been convened for eight o'clock, a half-hour later than the meeting of officers, also fell through in a similar manner, only about twelve men being present. We trust that the matter will not be allowed to drop, but that another meetmg ■will be. at once for an early date, when we hope to see more vigour and interest d'o- - than has hitherto proved the case.
