THE THAMES ELECTION.
To the Editor of the Herald.
Ser,—lf election matters here are ruled by home precedents, it may be of interest to your rsadors to be informed of a case germane to that of the-Tharoes election. At the general election iif 1874, Mr,' Peter Callan was a candidate, for Dundalk,.; County;Louth. Ho also at the' same time addressed'the electors of County Louth. He was returned for Dundalk by. a good majority. ..He afterwards ran with/Sullivan for Louth against G* Fortescue and O'Reilly Dease. The county election, it must be borne* in mind, took place a considerable time after the borough election. Oallan and.Sullivan- were .returned. The former . (the twice-elected) •did not for a long period state which constituency.!!©.would represent, until he had found what he thought to be—but which the county did not agree with—a suitable successor. He then announced to the Speaker of the House of Commons that he would accept the seat for Dundalk. Although that act complicated matters; not a question was or could be raised. If an objection could have' been urged,, the Governments of 'Mr. Gladstone would have t done their best to oust him from his seat.—X am, &c., Electob. Parnell, 3rd February, 1576. -•
