WAIUKU.
On Saturday last/the day appointed for the polling "for the Maori representative';in the General Assembly;/ there were several Maoris in Waiukuj but they seem to be nearly all on one side, consequently things passed off quietly. Mr. King was the returning officer, and some 15 natives voted. The poll closed at 4p. m., and the result was:
—Hone Nahe, 14 ; Wi Parata.l ; Te Kepa, 0. The natives say that Wi Parata has been in the House for the last five years and done no good. To Kcpa, or Major Kenip, is too much bound in with the Government, and they are determined to try a: new man. The polling for Franklin takes place to-morrow. A great many of the electors seem very indifferent about the matter, and say they will not lose their time to come in to vote. Several will have to come a distance of from nine to thirteen miles, and some as much as twenty, to record their votes. This is a long distance. It is a great pity that more polling places could not have been appointed, as there is no polling place between Waiuku and the South head of the Manukau to the Waikato Rive\ Messrs. Hamlin and Lusk are the favourites here; the other three candidates will get a few, merely their personal friends. I think Hamlin will be the highest here, and Woodward or Goodfellow the lowest on the ■poll. Mr. Goodfellow has not been among the electors here; probably he thought it unnecessary; but people like to hear and see who they are going to vote for. Weather still unsettled. Harvest work stopped in consequence of rain.—[Own Correspondent, January 17.]
