SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS.

GRAFTOJT ROAD DISTRICT SCHOOL. The annual meeting for the distribution of prizes to the successful scholars, was held in the District School, on Friday evenin'g. The room, which had been tastefully decoraocd with evergreens and flowers by the lady teachers and elder &'rls, was filled with scholars, their parents and friends.—Mr. Batger, the chairman of the committee, before distributing the prizes, addressed the children, and on behalf of the committee'expressed great pleasure and agreeable surprise at the results of the examination, whicli had been cod ducted by them during the course of the pnt week. In looking forward to the coming year, he trusted that the scholars and their parents would appreciate the labours of Mr. Martin and his staff of assistants, and cooperate with them, then at the next examination even greater results would be obtained. After the distribution of prizes, two "spelling bees," open to scholars of the first and second divisions were held, which created much interest amongst both scholars and parents. Mr. Nelson spoke highly of the progress of the pupils in various branches of knowledge, and gave an encouraging word to each of the prize-takers. At the clo:e three cheers were given for Mr. and Mrs. Nelson. The young people then resorted to music and dancing. OTAHTJHtr SCHOOL. Last Friday was quite' a gala day at Otahuhu. Tho children made their appearance at 9 a.m., evidently'determined to make the most of a fine day. The Rev. F. Gould very kindly devoted the best. part of the day to testing the pupils of the upper school in reading, writing, and arithmetic—a service for which the reverend gentleman is particularly well fitted. The lower school was examined by Messrs. Luke and • Markham, members of the School Committee.' The examiners expressed themselves as generally well pleased with the reading and writing,tand made especial mention of the third class. In mental arithmetic the senior pupils answered readily, while the junior seemed disposed "to leave the matter entirely to their elders* 111 tku evening, after games and "athletics,, the ■ ir-npany adjourned to ; the Public Hall," where the wellrcoyered tables testified to the wonted liberality of the residents of the district. . Eighty-four children attended the examination, but the number attending the tea was considerably piore. Mrs. Luke presided over the distribution of the prizes, every successful schoolfellow being heartily applauded ; after which, Mr. Luke, on behalf of the children, presented Mr.

Wannop with a very handsome writing--desk, as an expression of mutual good-will. In. thanking the children for their token of esteem 1 , the teacher said that their thanks! were equally due to Miss Gould, whose, patience they - often sorely tried, md still more so to their kind friends Mr. and Mrs.: Luke, who, year after year, did their utmost to promote the interests of the school. Six pupils of the Otahuhu school were prepared for the provincial scholarship examination, ;but only four actually went up to the examination.
