THE AUCKLAND RACING CLUB'S ANNUAL MEETING.

Tub time is approaching for these annual equestrian sports, and the interest taken in the events is daily on the increase amongst the sporting circles. Thus, trainers are busy at all the training stables in preparing their horses for the various coming struggles, and in giving them their daily " spins." Jockeys are engaged in bringing themselves into condition, by getting rid of superfluous flesh, and the race-course is receiving attention. Whilst all this is going on, speculation is taking place amongst those who take delight in betting, and which, as the races draw near, increases to feverish excitement. Sweepstakes—a more harmless form of speculation—are being subscribed for at various sporting houses, and the racing world in general is on the qui vive. Last evening was the night of general entry at the Exchange Hotel for several of the events to take place on New Year's day and the 3rd January, at Ellerslie. It was also the occasion of receiving acceptances for the Handicap Steeplechase, to take place on the second day's racing, and, in addition to this, the nominations were received for the Mares' Produce Stakes for the Summer Meeting, IS7S.
