THE DEBATE.
To the Editor of the Herald. Sir,—This morning I see you have given insertion to a lengthy letter addressed to Mr. Macandrew, by Mr. Pirth, the main. purport of which is, in effect, that Auckland ought to continue to send away South, for a sifting, the enormous revenue of £310,000 a-year. Truly and luckily Mr. Firth is nearly alone in this thing—nearly all else say, no. And I must think that his just denunciation of selfishness is wholly and. entirely misapplied.l own I never could.• quite see, not even during the recent land ■ clamour, a reason why the Otagans should not possess the territory of Otago. We well know, if Auckland had her own only she would be rich. As for a proud future consolidated nationality—consolidated of two diverse island countries—why, I see noreason for the pre-assumed magnificence,; unless we wish to hold ourselves in for-, midable preparation to proclaim a war.—l am, &c., W. E. Sadler. December 16, 1575.
