AUCKLAND SOCIETY OF ARTISTS.
The weather was unfavorable for the opening yesterday, and Bishop Cowie, who was to have formally opened tho exhibition, was unable to attead. The consequence was that as many spectators as might have been expected did not visit the Choral Hall. The Society does not regard yesterday as the opening day, and it is announced that Dr. Eilis will formally open the Exhibition today at five o'clock. There is, therefore, little to be added to our notice of yesterday, except to give in detail the contents of the particular departments. We will begin with the oil paintings by local artists. Saveral of these have been already noticed en account of some special excellence in each. Miss Ouihwaite's picture (Craigburnie Glen) is a most remarkable one, when considered as the work of a feminiue hand. Those of Mr. Albin Martin are worthy of note as possessing in a remarkable degree the artistic faculty and method of treatment. The "Boy's Head," by Mr. Partington, gives eveiy indication of future excellence. It is full of a vigorous manner. The "Waiwera Creek, by Miss J. Outhwaite, is another excellent picture. We subjoin, taken from the catalogue, the several pictures in this department, for we must be content to go through the exhibition in departments :— 136, Flowers, by Mrs. Stratford, £4 4s ; 317, Flowers, by Mrs. Stratford, artist, £4 4s ; 138, Landscape, J. Those who are critical will best judge for themselves of the merits of each, for all are well worth attention. Mr. Symon's pictures are not so remarkable for their general effeot as they are for some special characteristic upon which he appears to elaborate his work. This makes all his productions possess interest. Of the excellent flowers by Mrs. Stratford we have already spoken ; they are worthy of studious attention, and are indeed admirable. We may in each notice refer to the foreign pictures incidentally, for many of them possess interest as well as merit. "The Farmyard," by Herring, exhibited by Biflhop Cowie stands (facih jvrinceps) above .aU.ee
-the jewel of the exhibition. ' This picture is so rich, both in work and in effect, that one might examine it for hours' and: then not bave observed all its beauties. Mr. G. B. PGvren exhibits; a great number of pictures, them very interesting. "The : House '' of Claude JLorraine at. Rome,", exhibited by "* Dr. Ellis, is anotherreally interesting pic--tura. The pictures by Carmichael, exhibited also by Dr. Ellis, aTe also fine works of art. "Elaine studyingtheshield of Sir Launcelot," by Bedford, also exhibited by Dr. Ellis, will •comniiind the greatest _ amount of attention from those who : admire artistic treatment jather than subject. We shall in our next notice speak of the water colours drawn by local aitists.
