ABOLITION AT PAPAKURA.
To the Editor of the llerald. Sik, —I take the liberty of sayiug that what appeared in your Monday's issue, as to the duty which Mr. F. 11. Troup omitted to fuliil at the close of the above meeting, will never redound to the popularity of the rev. gentleman in putting such power in anyone's hands; nay, hut it would go better down with all if he did not meddle with such matters. Then, again, at Tuakau, at the meeting held there on the same subject, the people went there with a forgone conclusion, and , went in for abolition in the dark, refusing to.listen to any of the clauses of the Local Government Bill. Among them was one of the General Government officials making himself most prominent Of course he is bound to support his master. As a rule, the people are too lax ; but let us remember thnt a crisis has arrived, the result of which will either be to lay the foundation of the future weal or woe of the j entire of New , Zealand. lam one who is a deeply interested settler: who has been an elector from the first. To think that the Local Government Bill now before the House takes from the ratepayers the power of having a voice in levying their own local taxes, leaving the whole power in the hands of the Board, is monstrous iu the extreme. Do not let ourselves be duped, thinking that we will be freed from an unfair tax (education), for the Government shew that they have no such idea. lam one who lias ,been ft settler, from the first, therefore would like the good government of the land we live in.
