[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS.] Thames, Wednesday. In the Queen of Beauty, operations are carried on aj usual, the quartz being broken out from th'e , main lode at the 350-feet level. Sinking the main shaft has been suspended till the Bright Smile Company have reached a lower depth. The City of London is sinking on the winze, which continues through good quartz. Fair progress is being made on No. 4 reef. The show of quartz has improved, and gold is occasionally seen in the stone. The chamber at the bottom of the 240-feet level ia being pushed on as fast as practicable, but the water h a great drawback. The quantity i 3 much the same ; less, if anything. The Queen of the May show at the battery is better than it has been for Very good stone has been obtained fronitthe stopes. Near to the face of the workttfjfci the drive gold is shewing freely. From the bottom of the Prospectors' shaft golden stone continues to be brought np, chiefly from out of the conglomerate. In the stone where no gold is to be seen, capita] prospects are obtained in the mortar. The tunnel is in 33 feet, and the face of the drive is .shewing a large body of brown conglomerate. No gold is visible, but it is seen when tested in the mortar, and prospecting on the side of shaft 200 feet, shews moreover that the reef system here is surprising, and no doubt will shew that these, claims have one of the richest and most permanent loies in the colonies. One of the bouldera that had been displaced by a shot on a former occasion, was examined by Mr. Daniel, of the Crown Princess, and Mr. Sims, who discovered that the face of the stone—fully 18 inches—was literally covered with fine gold. Operations in the Britannia etarted list Saturday. Mr. Rowe, late of Waikato Engineers, is in charge. Several good prospects were obtained from different reefs, and a small quantity will be taken to the Thames by Mr. Daniel to test it thoroughly. The Golden Arrow people are about to open a drive at a lower level than that from which the prospects were obtained last week.

Great inconvenience is experienced for want of postal arrangements. CoKOMAKDEL, Wednesday. The Union Beach lodged with the National Bank, to-day, 323 ozs. 15 dwts. melted gold, the result of 140 lbs. of stone. It is a magnificent return, and more thaa. 100 ozs. over the highest expectations. The general stuff in winze is calculated to yield over 10 ozs. per ton. About 25 tons on hand. Arrived: Whangapoua. The highest fresh in the river this year has occurred. Communication by road is stopped from Kuiti. A number of canoes with produce are expected. Wellington", Wednesday. Holloway, of the Agricultural Labourers' Association, and Burton of Taranaki, have been appointed emigration agents for New Zealand by the General Government. New Plymouth, Wednesday. Charles Brown has been appointed Civil Commissioner in place of Mr. Parris, who retires on his pension.

The Taupo sailed with members this morning.

Christchurch, Wednesday. Mr. W. Dymock, who has resigned the management of the Bank of Australasia here to take the management of the National ißank at Dunedin, was presented with a costly gold watch and chain as a mark of esteem by the constituents of the former bank.

The spawning season at the Acclimatisasion Garden has commenced. 1000 trout ova have already been obtained for artificial hatching. . The curator expects to get more than double the number of ova that was obtained last year. About 2000 trout were hatched out last year. A large number of trout of immense size have been caught in the Avon, some weighing over fifteen pounds each.

In the Supreme Court this morning an action for damages £5000, for libel, was commenced. The plaintiff is Joseph Newton, an importer of seeds and agricultural implements, and the defendant is William 'Wilson, seedsman and nurseryman, formerly Mayor of Christchurch. The alleged libel is based on a statement said to have been made by Wilson: That Newton would be in the Bankruptcy Court within three months. The evidence created considerable amusement. Verdict for plaintiff, enS farthing damages. The Supreme Court sat to-day. In the case of Bein v. Walker, £500 damages for slander, the verdict was for the defendant. The Christchurch Metropolitan Races are fixed for the Sth, 10th, and 12th of November. DuNEDiir, Wednesday. Mr. Walters is elected Mayor by a majority of 372. Great excitement. Files per Otago shew that for the Melbourne Cup, Imperial has come into the betting market at 100 to 7 ; Echo, 100 to 5 ; Kingsbrough is still first favourite for both the Metropolitan and the Champagne race. Lurline has been backed at a shade less odds than Kingsbrough, for the Champion ; and Calumny is first favourite for the Hawkesbury Handicap. In the Supreme Court, in the case of<Glassford v. Reid, an action to recover £1000 damages, for the pollution of the stream at Manukerika, the jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff of one shilling for polluting the stream, and £50 for damage to property.
