WHATAWHATA.

since writing my last, Wliatawhata, in common with other districts, has suffered from a severe drought, which lias proved to the inhabitants that, whatever other virtues the place may have, it .lyes (low with milk ami butter. We have had a change in the Hoad Hoard lately, a happy change fur Wliatawhata Judging by the work that is being dune on the roads, the Hoard are evidently preparing for winter, and the main mad will lw much better than it was last winter. Thtire is one stiep hill about a mile from Whatawhata on the Alexandra road which sadly needs improving ; but as the principal sulierer is a wretched fellow who lives further on, and who, they say, will not pay his rates, it cannot be expected that the J toad Hoard will have much sympathy with him. A new punt has been sent up to replace the old one. It was much needed, and will prove a great boon to travellers. The Waikato clergymen still hold aloof from Whatawhata, except Mr. Golden. We are not particular as to what communion the clergyman who will visit us might belong, for we represent all creeds here—from High Church to Swedenborgians. Perhaps they think we cannot raise a good collection ! There seems to be more likelihood of a houso of public drinkii:g being opened than a house of public worsliip—for some time at least - and it seems strange that, in a large and prosperous district like this, there should be no church. You might ■write a little on the subject, Mr. Editor ; it would do more good than me doing it.— [Correspondent, May IS, 1575.
