COMMERCIAL.

New Zeaxaxd Heraxd Office, Saturday evening, Melbourne. —The Argus of the 12th reports:— Flour is unaltered, there is little inquiry, and not much offering. We arc without any sales of wheat to refer to; we quote at 5s Sd to 5s 9d for prime Northern qualities. Oats are decidedly firmer again; we hear of sales of common quality at 5s Id, and for good feeding we quote up to 5s 3d. Maize is very dull at 5s 5d to 5s Gd; there is n»*» general inquiry, but we learn of tho quittance of a considerable parcel, and stocks are now getting into much narrower compass. Sugars arc quiet, andonlytradesalesare reported. Brewing crystals have been disposed of at £34 to £36. We also hear of a brewer's parcel of Slioobridse's 1574 hops (a very

fine sample) ho-vhig been placed at tho extreme figure of 2s. sales of new currents are reported at Gd. We continue to note a very considerable demand iudeed for teas, chiefly in boxes. One line of 2000 boxes congous is stated to have changed hands at about Is Sid; in another case about 1000 boxes were got rid of" at Is to Is 3d and Is sd. Half-chests have also found buyers; a lino of low con* gous was placed at lOd, and about, 600 packages medium to fine were quitted at Is 7d to Is lOd. In liquids tho sale of 1000 cases JJennessy's brandy is said to have been effected privately at 2Ss 4jd. Under tho hammer, SO hhds. and quarters Hennessv's were taken up at 7s IOJd, and common brandy sold at 5s 6d. Cotton: "Mr. Mort reports:—" Since the date of our last there has been a decided improvement in Fiji long staples, and about 40;> bales have changed hands at from 6£d to lOd for stained and inferior, and lid to 14d for better descriptions, being an advance of fully Id per lb. We should not, however, like to lead our'friends to imagine that this is the commencement of a return to old dates, as such a consummation must, wo think, be inevitably checked by tho heavy stocks of American Sea Island cotton now lying in Liverpool, and which amount to 10,470 bales, as against 7470 at tins time last year. Ail the higher prices have been given by Continental buyers, and have been realised in London, tho Liverpool brokers finding it impossible to movo the small quantity of Fiji cotton lying in that market."
