Isaacs report of th-ir auction sale this day;—3o tanks sold £3 15-f to i'i 17s t r d. A large quantity of ship's stores sold for full prices. The few lines of groceoies and oilmen's stores offered realised fair prices. The trade was fully represented, and the sale c-n the whole may be considered an improvement on previous sues, the trad* being in better spirit, and more inclination to jjuxchase a few lines, still no margin of prolit could bo realised on regular staple goc-ds. SUMMARY FOIL TJTE M'iNTII. Tsvo events have transpired this month of considerable importance commercially to this colony— particularly so to Auckland. We refer to the resumption of the Californian mail service, and the cession of Fiji to tho British Crown. As to the mail arrangements, we have no definite information, MrThomas Russell not yet having returned from Sydney, whither he went to complete arrangements with the New South Wales Governmeut. We are, however, in

general terms, assured that arrangements harejbeen completed, by which no further break will occur in the communication by this route. As an assurance Of the reconstruction of the line, the Macgregor is t» arrive here from Sydney to-morrow, in a detour from Sydney to Honolulu and San Francisco, to carry our outward malls. Tho annexation of Fiji is now an assured fact, and this should tend to great'y strengthen our commercial relations with those islands. There was always a feeling of distrust in doing business with these islands so lone; as tli<*y remained in the anomalous position of being governed in a semi-savage state, but now we look forward to an extension of our relationship with these islands, and a considerable increase in our trade. Auckland, as the nearest port of call, will naturally reap any benefits likely to accrue therefrom. Already wo notice a considerable advance in Fiji Bank shares. The enterprising capitalists who floated this concern richly deserve the reward they will now no doubt reap.

During the month there have been several important meetings of public companies, the reports of which will be found under their respective heads. The fourth half-yearly meeting of the shareholders of the South British Fire and Marine Insurance Company was held on the 12th, when a dividend at the rate of 10 per cent, per annum was declared. On the 22nd the halfyearly general meeting of the proprietors of the Bank of New Zealand was held, when a dividend with bonus added amounting to 15 per cent, was declared f besides earning some ,£14,600 to the credit of the next half-year.

We learn that over 30,000 shares have bee.a applied for iu the new issue of the New Zealand Insurance Company, thus leaving only 11,000 for allotment, out of which the applications from Australia, not re ceived yet, will have to be supplied. This is highly satisfactory, and more than anything in the face of existing opposition institutions of ft similar description, is evidence of the popularity of the oldest established of them

Trade since our last has been seriously interfered with, by the prevailing bad weather during the early portion of the month. Fine weather has, however, now sot in, and there is promise of a favorable reac-

tiou. As will be seen by our shipping summary, the arriva's and departures have been fully up to the average ilming the. montu. atucKa ur nearly every description are full to requirement?, and more than full in many departments. Oilmen's stores and groceries are not heavily stocked, b.tt sjveral large orders arc afloat, we believe. In spirits, brandies are faiilv stocked. Rum is in full supply at present, l.ut geneva and gin are lightly held. Ales and porter are overstocked, but the season is f.ivorable for mov ing them otf. Sugars are held to requirements, but Houolulus are in request; prices are not at all satisfactory. Teas are still heavily stocked, and move but slowly. The Hero brought to hand large consignments. Candles are also overstocked, and prices unsatisfactory, whilst there are advices of further shipments. Kerosene is stocked above requirements. .Hops have advauced slightly. Tobaccos have improved, in sympathy with American advices, and 3d per lb. advance is now asked upon last quotations. Dried fruits are only lightly stocked, and in face of the cominE Christmas season must advance. The grain and produce market is in a most unsatisfactory condition. Flour fluctu ited during the month, but has again settled down to last month's quotations. Oats and maize are scarce, and the recent importations of Californian oats have sold at 5s Gd, and are iu demand in Christchurch at that price. 100 bags of Fiji maize, of very indifferent quality, sold yesterday at 4s lOd.
