The s.s. Ladybird will leave Onehunga for the South at noon to-day. The s.s. Rowena took her departure for Russell and the North last night, with passengers and cargo. A notice to shippers by the s.s. Southern Cross to Tauranga appears elsewhere. The A. S.N Company's steamship Victoria, Captain Durrell, is appointed to leave at noon to-day, for Sydney and Melbourne. "l he barq'ientine built bp Messrs. Sims and. Brown, at the >iorth Shore, will be launched this morning at 10 o'clock. Y.'e learn that Captain Kennedy, formerly commander of the steamer Paterson, has been appointed to the command of the new steam-collier Easbv, trading between Newcastle and Duncdin. The p.s. Golden Crown did not come up from the Thames last night, but will leave there at 0 a.m. to-day. She will return to the Thames this afternoon at half-past 2 o'clock. The A.S.P. Co.'a s.s. Southern Cross, which left on Monday evening for Napier, was forced to put back for shelter from the strong N.E. wind blowing outside. She started again yesterday morning .with a fair wind. The barque Vivid, from Launceston. on discharge of her cargo of potatoes, will leave for Newcastle in ballast. She has entered outwards at the Customs for that port. The boisterous weather during the last few days has delayed the discharge and ballasting of the barque Bella Mary. She will leave for Uobart Town positively on Friday next, and ha? accommodation for a limited number of passengers. The brig Syren is reported to have taken the ground at Tairua, whii.».t being towed out of the harbour. She ■floated c.fi the bar on which she struck after being lightened, throwing overboard her deck cargo, consisting of timber. The A.S.P. Co/s s.s. Pretty Jane, now overdue from Napier via Ciisborne, is no doubt detained by lieavy •vveather. She would seek shelter in one of the bay.* along the coast. She brings a cargo of live stock for this market, and may be expected as soon as the •weather moderates. The specification for the repairs required to the Swedish ship Condoren are being prepared, and tenders will be advertised for by the agents in course of to-morrow. She entered inwards yesterday at the Custom-house with her cargo of coal originally intended for the San Francisco market.
The tine fore-and-aft schooner Belle Brandon, Captain F. Olilson, arrived yesterday in harbour from Levuka, via Taviuna. .She left. Levuka on the 9th September, and arrived at Taviuna licit day. Took in maize and produce, and sailed for Auckland on the 17th instant, at 0 p.m. Had fine weather, ■with very light winds and calms until the 23th instant, when Cape Brett was made at C p.m.; from thence moderate breezes with heavy rain till arrival. She brings a full cargo of Island produce, and several passengers. A screw steamer, built on the composite principle, ■was launched yesterday niorniDg from Mr. George lioss's shipbuilding yard, Freemin'. 1 ; Bay. The ves:iel has been creditably and strongly built, and structed to th* order of Messrs. Kinross and Co., of Xapier. who intend her for the Bast Coast trade. She will be commanded by Captain of Napier, whose littli* boy performed the ceremony of christening. The steamer was named the " Sir Donald," and was very successfully launched, although a strong northerly wind was blowing at the time. She will be fitted w th high-pressure, surface condensing engines, by Messrs. eraser and Tinne, and will at once be taken alongside their boiler shop, ill Mechanics' Bay basin to receive the same. The dimensions af the new steamer are as follow: Length of keel, G-i feet; lenzth over all, 70 feet: beam, 14 feet; depth of hold, 6 feet G inches; tonnage, builders measurement, about GO tons. She will be really for sea in the course of eight days. After the ceremony the usual festivities wero indulged in.
