Gentlemen, —The return of Mr. Von derHejde having been declared void, I have the honor again to offer myself as a candidate to represent your district in the General Assembly. Having been told that my action in the matter of the petition, which resulted in the unseating of Mr. Yon der Heyde, is disapproved of by some of your number, I take this opportunity of assuring you that I believed it was my duty to follow the course of proceeding which I did, even if only in consideration for those electors who had exerted themselves on my behalf; and although I consider that personation and such like disreputable practices are too frequently resorted to at elections, and are most reprehensible, I hold it to be perfectly correct to ttse all fair and legitimate means to defeat an opponent.
