OTAHUHU MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT SOCIETY.

The usual fortnightly meeting of this society i was held on Monday evening last, in the Public Hall. There was an excellent attendance, —Mr. Sturges occupying the chair. —The Rev. Mr. Gould read an essay on ''Music," which was full of interest and instruction. He divided his subject into five heads : Some remarks ou music in general, its nature and effects. 2. Giving an outline of the history of the art. 3. Explaining the origin of what is known as the musical scale, and the power of the human voice with regard to it. 4. Observations on the various systems that have been adopted for the purpose of giving instruction in music, enunciating under this head the principles which appeared to him most feasible, and concluded by shewing the importance of the general cultivation of the art. The essay was listened to with marked attention, and, after some discussion, the rev. gentlsinan received a cordial vote of thanks. —The President announced that the business of the next meeting would be a debate on " Was the reign of Oliver Cromwell beneficial to England or otherwise.'"
