To the Editor of the Herald: Sir,—Under the head of telegraphic in your to-daj 'a issue 1 ivtiee that Captain Robeits, of the ship Plenties at L> .telton, states that he " repeatedly has to go inside Rangitoto reef without a pilot." Now, CapUin Robeils has visited Auckland four times only—arid that within the last seven vears—twice in the ship Maoi (ISO 7 and 'CP/, and twice'in the shipCaducens(lS7l and' 72). and with one exception, the arrival of the C'aduccus in IS7I, explained by the accompanying letters, which 1 beg may be published, Captain Robews did get a pilot before coming to ltangitoto reef, notably the last time the C'aduceus arrived the pilot boarding her just inside Tiritiri. As regards the pilot service. 1 may state that for 21 years past I have used eve./ exertion possible, with the means at my disposal, to meet the demands of shipping.— I remain, sir, your obedient servant, I. J. I? cuo ess, Chief Harbourmaster and Pilot. — The following are the letters referred to :—" From Captain Roberts to the Chamber of Commerce, dated 23rd March, 1573. About 11 a.m. on a tine night, with a fair wiud for entering the harbour, I rounded Tiritiri and ran down towards the Rangitoto reef witli easy sail, with the lead going. Fired seveu guns, sent up a number of rockets, and burnt blue lights at intervals as persuasives to induce the pilot to come off, but to no purpose. I had to anchor inside the reef, and waited for a p'lot: thus I lost nearly one day."—The following is a copy of Captain Burgess's reply: — "Pilotage of Caducous. — Sir, —In yesterday's issue I notice that in a report of a meeting of the Chamber of Commerce, held on Thursday, Captain Roberts, of the ship Caducous, states that on his arrival cfT Tiritiri at 11 p.m. of the 22nd ultimo, he tired guns, &c., to induce a pilot to come off, but to no purpose, and that the ship consequently lost a whole day. Allu«v me to stAtc that this is not quite correct. The Caducous arrived off Tiri (i.e. sixteen miles from the North Head) at 11 p.m of the 22nd; at 1 a.m. of the 23rd (two hours after\ I heard the report of a guu seaward, and immediately went out with the pi'ot boat, boarded the vessel off Rangitoto reef, and anchored her off Queen-street Wharf a little after daylight, i some seven hours after her arrival oft" Tiritiu.—l am, Ac., I. The new principle of determining the depth to which a vessel may be pafely immersed according to Lloyd's regulations will be found to apply more equitably to all models than the old principle, which required all ships to have three inches of freeboard to every foot depth of hold.
