PRESENTATION TO MR, THOS. KIRE, F.L.S.
A HEETDi'G of the members of the Auckland Institute was convened at 3 p.m. yesterday, at the Museum Buildings, Princes-street, in order to present Mr. Kirk with a parting souvenir, in recognition of his lengthy aid va'uable services to the Institute. The President of the Institute (Sir Gr. A. Arney), in making the presentation, stated that a purse of sovereigns (£SO) had been made up, partly by vote of the Institute, the balance by private subscription of the members, and that he felt great gratification in handing it to M*. Kirk, as a slight token of acknowledgment of fcje distinguished services he had rendered to the interests of the Institute. He regretted that he had not been able to attend the meetings and bear the admirable papers prepared by Mr. Kirk on botanical subjects. The province could ill afford to lose men possessed of high scientifio attainments, but he trusted that though Mr. Kirk was about to remove to Wellington, to impart a given kind of scientific training to the youth of that city, his service* would not be wholly lost to the Auckland Institute.—Mr. Kirk, in a few well chosen sentences, thanked Sir George A. Arney for the kind and generous manner in which he had referred to his services, as also those member j of the Institute who had contributed to thii handsome present he had just received. He would always entertain a lively recollection of their generous recognition of his services, and hoped that he would still be ouabled to render further aid to the Auckland Institute.
