SrDNEY. —Our Sydney exchanges are to the 2-kh instant. The Sydney Herald reports the car<*o of Mauritius sugar ei Prince Alfred, vrii3 offered by Stubbs and Co. this morning, and attracted a large attendance of the trade. Rations anil yellows sold about the same as previous sale. The biddings for Cue counters and crystals were not equal to importers' value, and the greater portion were withdrawn for higher prices. The only noticeable feature in the Stock and Share market this morning, was the continued demand for bank stock, and at advanced prices. Cily went up to 11; Commercial to 70 ; South Wales brought 47 Jto 47|; and Joint Stock were sold at 135. For other stocks buyers were not inclined to pay Bellers' quotations, and the only other transaction reported was City of Sydney debentures (due 1S83) at 109. Things have been remarkably quiet in the import markets this week. Probably tho heavy arrivals lately have led consumers to expect lower prices, and the demand for goods has thus been kept back. Ale and Porter— Bulk ale is somewhat easier, but quotations have not been altered. There has been a brisk sale of »ood brands of bottled at mail quotations, but bulkaud bottled porter are in good request. Bans and bagging—Cornsacks appear likely to harden ugain, and an advance of 3d lias been secured on Sounu moderate sized parcels to-day. Woolpaci.s are not sought after. Candles —The market continues firm at 103 d to IOJd for medium, and lid for first-class brands. Coffee —A further advance is quoted ; sales of Bmall parcels being made tit 12xd per lb., an advance which will probably be established. Metals —There is a little more doing in luetuls. Galvanized iron sold at £40 10s, Gospel Of k brand ; Morewood's at £30 15s for small parcel ; Wolverhampton iron sold at £36 7s 6d ; pig is worth £8 10s. to £8 15b. Oils, Paint, &e. —Kerosene is quoted at 2s Id to 2s l|d per gallon in bond ; linseed and colza oils arc firm, and there is a good demand for turpentine. Oilmen's Stores, Groceries, &c.—lt would be impossible to give reliable quotations after the recent forced sales by auction. Importers are somewhat more assured now that the failures are at an end, for a time at least, and business will probably improve. Salt—Sales of Liverpool coarse have been made at £14 12s 6d per ton. Kock is quoted at £4 10s to £i 15s per ton. Spirits—The advance in brandies has been well maintained this week, and holders refuße any lower priccs than those last quoted. A considerable parcel of rum was placed at 3s 5J per gallon this week. Sugars—There have been some opportune arrivals this week, both of raw and refined sugars. The cargo of Mauritius sorts, ex Prince Alfred, was offered by auction on Wednesday morning. The biddings for fine counters and crystals were not up to the importer's limits, and tho greater part were bought in ; for rations to yellow the last public Bale rates were obtained." The Empire Bays: —" Wool: Tho Beason having now nearly drawn to a close the quantities of wool coming forward are so limitod that the sales are for tho next few months only to be held fortnightly, as is usual during the winter season. No sales were held this week. We are therefore left without any remarks under this head. Hides—Owing to the large number offered at yesterday's auction Bales and the telegrams of a decline in the English market, prices were scarcely bo firm, and the fall was more noticeable upon butchers' hides than those in wet condition. Of 3872 offered 3112 found buyers, best heafies ranging from 5d to 5Jd ; heavies, sid to 6d; medium, 6d to GJd; light and middling, 7d to B£d. Subjoined are the catalogues of sales: — Tallow: The demand yesterday, 23rd instant, for all classes of tallow was not up to the previous week's sales. The reason assigned for shipping lots being neglected was chiefly attributable to the scarcity and present rates of freight ruling. There were 298 casks submitted under the hammer, and 125 casks were quitted as follow: —Best mutton, from £35 to £36 10s; best beef, £33 to £34; mixed station, £28 to £33 per ton.

Melbotthne, May 22.—The Argue of this date reports :—" In the import markets business has been Bomewhat uninteresting throughout the day. The demand for merchandise as "well aB produce has been very slack, and the sales effected of very little account. Breadstuffa are not much run after by any means. Flour is quitted in small lots at £14 5s to £14 9s. Wheat

13 offering al 5s to 5s 11(3, but supplies still come forward for sale very slowly indeed. Oats are rery saleable. Maize is quitted at 4s 6d. The public sale of sugar this forenoon did not go off so satisfactorily; a sale of 2235 bags, a portion of the Charles Auguste's cargo, was offered, but the brokers only succeeded in getting rid of 1600 bags at £29 5s for rations, £31 5s tor browns, £33 15s for low yellows, and £36 10s to £38 10s for good to fine counters. Sales of Devoe's kerosene oil are mentioned at Is 9d. Hops are in moderate request; trade parcels of Stephen Wright's have been disposed of at Is 4d. Rice is steady, Patna being very firm; other descriptions are not so much inquired for. Sales of Hennessy's case bruudy ere making at 275."
