PUBLIC MEETING AT COROMANDEL.
A public meeting was held on Tuesday evening, in the Coromandel Hall, to consider the advisability of forming a Volunteer corps in the district. Over one hundred and thirty persons were present, and Dr. Hovell was voted into the chair. Mr. Ross, tlie convener of the meeting, proposed the first resolution, as follows:—"Tlwt in the opinion of this meeting a Volunteer corps should be immediately formed for the protection of the people of this district." —Mr. "Walker moved the following amendment'" That in the opinion of this meeting a requisition, Eigned by the inhabitants of this district, be seol to the proper authorities, asking that a supply of arms and ammunition bo forwarded to the resident magistrate of this district, to be by him distributed among the inhabitants, and used for fche _ protection of the neighbourhood against native attacks. —The mover, Mr. R. Harrisson, and other gentlemen, Bpoke Btrongly in favor of the amendment, considering it useless, and also infra diy. t to offer the services of a Volunteer corps here again, euch having been refused by the Government on more than one occasion previously.—Mr. John R. Randeraon spoke Btrongly.—The amendment was put, "when ebout seventy voted for it, and only three hands were held up for the motion, which w as therefore lost.—A committee of six were appointed to forward the resolution to the proper authorities.
