THE FLAGSTAFF AT KORORAREKA.
To the Editor of the Herald. g IBj —You will confer on me a great honor, by allowing me a Bmall space in your valuable paper, to ask the simple question, viz., How it is that, the Government of XS'ow Zealand do not appoint a signalman for the Kororarek* flagstaff? I am sure the cost would be trifling. Tlio signalman's salary would probable not amount to more than £lf!0 per annum. Or, if the Government did not think fit to appoint a stationary signalman, I have no doubt but the pilot-boat I crew (consisting of two men) would undertake to hoist the signals on occasions for a few pounds per annum to their present salaries. Tlio Maoris asked the above question at tho great meeting, when the monument of Tr.rniiti Walker was unveilled, and were quite in-
dignant at the above flagstaff not being used after they, the Maoris, erecting the above as a token of submission. I do not think the Government will do wrong in appointing a man for the above duty, as by doing so it will be very convenient to the whites, and will also shew the natives that we wish to !i**« together in peace.—Yours, &c., Tno.MA3 Peabce.
