AUCKLAND COLLEGE.
Who shall go about to cozen fortune And be honorable without the stamp of merit! —Shakespearb. To the Editor of the Hehaid. Sib,—Many who have anxiously watched the current of events in connection with the Auckland College will feel grateful to " Gra. duate" for hie leUer in your yesterday's issue. Every sentence of his is pregnant with meaning, and does alike credit to his head and his heart. Might I be allowed to ask a question which, possibly, you can answer, but which I have heard put repeatedly, and to men who, one would think, ought to know : What is I the literary status of the head of the college ? Perhaps you will allow me to mention this— I beliofe it is not generally known, —he was a rejected candidate for the head-mastership of the High School of Dunedin, where the remuneration ia not much more than one-third of his nett receipts from the Auckland public purse ; and where his " interest " from his " connexion " was much greater than that of any other candidate. There, however, canny Scotchmen rule the-roast, and they will have their " bawbee's worth." They took the best man they could get for their money. Till other influences prevail at our College Council Board learning must languish.— I am, &c, UKDEEaBADT/ATE. January 4, 1873. [The Principal of the Auckland College, we have always understood, is entitled, by bid ability and acquirements, to the position he at present holds. But we are at present altogether unacquainted with the merits or demerits of the present controversy. — Ed. N.Z.H.]
