THE NEW ARCADE
We were yesterday favoured with a view 0 f the plans of the proposed Arcade, which is to run between Shortland-street and X'ort-street For a very long time past it has been felt that some nearer mode of access was required from Sbortland-street to Fort-street than by going round by Queen-street. Most people must have noticed the vacaut allotment of land on the east Jde of Hobson's Buildings (occupied as the business premises of Messrs. Mc Arthur Shera and Co.). This site is about to be filled' up by a very handsome block of building;, with a main frontage to Fort-street. Oa the western side of this block, and between it and Hobson's Buildings, will be a very handsome Arcade, 20 feet wide by 156 feet long, ono side of which will be occupied by a number of shops, with upper floors, the whole covered by a circular glass roof. There will be nine shops iu this Arcade each of which will be accessible from a passa°e at the back, running from Fort-street to Short-land-street. The main entrances will, 0 f course, be from the Arcade itself. The doors shop-windows, aud upper windows are to be of a uniform style, aud will present a very handsome appearance. The shops will be 20 feet broad by 24= feet deep. Xhe main building, on the eastern side of the Arcade will be throe-stories high, aud will be surmounted by a skylight roof in the centre. This building will be let off in offices, and will, doubtless, very soon iiud occupants. The architect is Mr. M. H. Clayton, of Wellington, and we understand that the building will very shortly be commenced.
