AUCKLAND COLLEGE CADET CORPS.
lir Tuesday's issue we referred to the rumoured intimation by Major G-ordon that the Cadet corps of the Auckland College would not hereafter be recognised by him. Seeing that the corps is one of the very best in .the province,
we thought it rather hard on the lads. On inquiry, we find that the difficulty arose in this way. Mr. Baird, the principal of the school, countermanded an order of the officer commanding without first communicating with that officer and obtaining his consent. Indeed, it would seem that Mr. Baird had nothing whatever to do with the Cadet corps, as such. The course that should have been taken was for the Captain of the Cadet corps to have applied to Major Gordon to-relieve the corps from attendance at the Keview. This was not done ; and of course private authority cannot over-rido military discipline. At the same time, the case is an exceedingly hard one for the boys and their parents, who are punished for au indiscretiou of Mr. Baird. We should advise the captain of the Cadet corps in question, to report the circumstance to Major Gordon, and doubtless, on a full explanation, lfche company will be restored to its original position. At the same time, we do not qualify a single expression in our former article regarding the costliness and superfluity of the Militia and Volunteer staff.
