Larceny.—William Burnett was charged with stealing tobacco to the value of Is. from the schooner Lrctit-iu.—On tiie appli.-aiion of the police, the ease, was adjourned until this (Wednesday) morning. i\ r F07..-OTED CIiTLUKKX. —Sarah, Mary, Mar garot, and Alice Halliday, were brought before tin; Uench under this Act.—From the statement of Mr. Inspector Brohan; it annearcd that tiio mother of the children was in prison, and the father had lately suffered a severe accident. The children were all under ten years of age, and were entirely dependent on their neighbours for support. The e!de=t was ordered to the industrial School for three years, the second fov four years, and the youngest for seven years,— the father to assist in their support when he comes out of hospi Mil. MeCarrigle, for :i similar offence, was also fined 10s. Bri:ach of Impouxdixg Act.—William Mudd pleaded nor guilty to a charge of allowing his entire horse to wander at. large in the Waitakerei district.—-Several witnesses were examined, and deposed to the iiorse being astray.—Defendant pleaded the animal had been found on property whose ownership had not yet been clearly ascertained.—The Bench, however, considered that a- the horse had been clearly out of defendant's property, ho should be cautioned. They, therefore, did so, and allowed him to depart, on payment of costs. BituACii of Ms SliuoiiTKh-iiol-sk Act.— Edward Richards plea led guiity of slaughtering five pigs in a place not. a public slaughterhouse.—Mr. Hassling, for the prosecution, pressed for a heavy penalty, as defendant, had been a licensed slaughter.nan, and. having had his licence bUspendeu, must have bee.: aware of the regulation.'.—Defendant wished to know on what grounds his licence had been cancelled ; and F. G. Clayton, 1 jsseo of ihe Newmarket Slaughter-house, gave the requisite in formation.—Uotendant pleaded extenuating circumstances.—Fined live shillings an t costs for each pig, am! dismissed with a caution.
