WANGAREI.

Com.—On a vinifc to the spot whero Mr, Bedlington is boring for coal, I found he had

mnk 14S feet, and had apparently struck the

iron stone. Messrs. Bedlingtou and S Dent are very sanguine of success; they hive persevered through every obstacle, and fully deserve it. I se2 that an application has been mado to the Council for a grant of money to enable Mongonui to be prospected. Why should not our energetic prospectors be assisted by the Government?

Philharmonic Society.—The members of the society meet regularly for practice, under their conductor, Mr. T. Bamsay, and are indebted to the Misses Mair for a nico collection ot music presented by them. A concert is to be held on Tuesday, 2nd of January next. Mr. G-. O. Taylor has b.-en unanimously elected president of the society.

Public Meeting.—A public meeting was ield in the Court-house, yesterday, to taUo

into consideration what steps should bo adopted twards the erection of a school-house

and public halt. The meeting was pretty well attended by the residents in tho village. On the motion of Mr. .Rust, Mr. Wood was voted to tho chair. After some remarks by Dr. Perston, in reference to the matter, it was proposed by the Rev. J. Wallace that the building intended to be erected should be called a pwblic school, which motion was carried. After some discussion as lo thu site, it was proposed by the Kov. J. Wallace, and carried, that Messrs. M. Davis, W. Simpson, and Uoliuan, be appointed a committee to obtain information as to what suitable sites were obtainable, and on what terms, imd to report to the next meeting. There being no more business the meeting dispersed. Waxgauei Ankual Kac-s.—A new com-

nillco has been formed to carry out the Wangiirei annual races, at Wangarei, as usual, lie committee to meet on the 3rd proximo,

when the programme will bo forwarded for publication'. Mr. Gγ. C. lay lor, whose liberality in such matters i* well known, has entered heart and ha::il into the matter, and is ably seconded by Messrs. J. Grahamc and Seeeombe.

are but slightl}- appreciated. On one occasion only Micro was 11 fair attendance. From this stnf.e of affairs we cannot Iμ surprised thai, a dillicultv arises in building a school-house in the City of the STorth. I uni sorry to say tlmt the horse of Mr. Howard win seriously injured by a bullock to-day, which inflicted a severe ivoiind in its aids. It, is uncertain whether the horse will livo. The weather for the lust few years Ims been intensely hot, unci nil kinds of vtgotaliou are becoming parehed and withered. The schooner Clyde arrived yesterday, with cargo and passengers. Tiio p.s. Duke of Edinburgh arrived this morning with paesengers, cargo, and cattle. She offers a fine opportunity to visitors to our locality, as she runs until the OtH of January at a single fare both wavs, tourists providing themselves with eatables. The absurdity of shipping cattle during this hot weather, immediately thpy arrive from a long journey, was exemplified this evening. A number of cattle from Maungatapcro were shipped this afternoon without, giving them any rest in tho stockyar.l ; tw<s are already dimd. Tho cattle were iu good order, but were juded and worn-out by their hot and wearisome I ravel. — [Correspondent, Dec. 19.]
