PROVINCIAL COUNCIL ELECTION.
TESTEEDir, noon, being fixed for the nonn na tion of candidates to fill the seat in th e P. vincial Council vacated by the decease of a late Dr. Stratford, the Eeturniag-o*,: 8 (Colonel Balneavis) attended, and read, th usual writ commanding the election, e was only one candidate (Mr. Tonka), besides whom and his proposer and seconder, thert were very few electors present The writ having been duly published and , ' read, the Returning-Officer made the nsaal inquiry whether any elector had a candidal to propose.-llr G. Von der Heyde proposed air. Tonkg as a fit and proper person to represent the district in ths Provincial Council* He considered it an honor to be the proposer of so eligible a gentleman to sit in the Council for Paruell. Hβ was the more pleased to discharge such a duty, as he had Lad many opportunities of judging o f very high qualifications of Mr. Tonka i n the many offices which he had filled in connection" with public institutions. A3 all the electors mast have had similar opportunities of judging of the qualities of the candidate, there was no need for comment beyond recommending him to the : - suffrages.—Mr. W. H. Kissling seconded the nomination of Mr. Touks.—The Returning. Officer inquired whether there wa3 any other candidate, and receiving no response, d clared Mr. Tonks duly elected a member f<, • Parnel , . (Hear, hear.)— Mr. Touks, iu re turning thanks, said : Mr. Keturning-Officw and gentlemen,—l feel the honor you ha*e dons me all the more from the fact that it was unsolicited on my part. You have returned me without any pledge, leaving me free to go into the Council to Tote for that which I believe to be for the benefit of the country—unpledged to party, and unhampered by any political traditions. I will not detain you by any further remarks at present than saying that I will do ray best for the interest of the province and the constituency ofParnell. (Hear, hear.)
The usual vote of thanks to the Returning. Officer concluded the proceedings.
