Saturday, 10 p.m. Junction.—The monthly clean-up for this eompany took place last evening, at tho Herald battery, and the result ie 195 i ozs. retorted gold. This yield is very much superior to that of last month, as only tea heads have been at work on the average, and, although the stuff crushed was much smaller in quantity, yet the yield of gold is one-third more than that of last month. The beet of the stone is coming from the stopes of the main leader in the beach level going towards the All Nations. Aβ reported on a former Occasion, the manager is preparing to sink on the main leader, to open out a new level below the beach tunnel, and from this sinking something good is expected, as the little gold obtained latterly can be seen to make down. Caledonian. —I am very glad to record that the water has at last been overcome, and that on Slonday morning steps -will be taken for the resumption of work in the new low level. Unexpectedly this morning it was discovered that No. 1 vrinze, on the specimen leader, had" communicated with the low level, and also that the leader last intersected in the low level cross-cut to the E., or into the hill, "wasnone Other than the celebrated specimen leader. It appears that the men had only lefl a few inches of dirt over their beads in the loiv level when under this winze, and that the late heavy influx of water caused this to bo broken away. This discovery is of tho utmosl importance, as it Bets forever at reel whether gold -would be found in this level or not, but this muck I make bold to say, that either the last day, or las but one, the. contractors were Jin this winze, went below and examined the leader, nnd, a
will bo oonGrinod by the report of that day, I saw gold in the foot of the winze, and that not sparingly. This morning thero is also an improved show of gold in the footwall of the main run, while tho block of ground between the two winzes shows about the quantity of the precious metal as reported yesterday. Otago.—This morning a report was current that the manager of this mine had at last obtained gold, and on proceeding to him, he showed me several samples of very fine stone in which gsld was freely disseminated. This is conGrmed by one of your contemporaries' correspondents, who proceeded below and saw also gold in the face of lhe drive. This is from the No. 2 reef, which was intersected at thirty feet from the shaft, and has now been driven towards the boundary of the Caledonian for twenty-five feet, where the reef is two feet wide, and from whence the gold came. It is promising well, but further particulars on Monday.
