MANGAPAI.

Tea. Meeting.—On Thursday, tho Gth inst., a. public tea meeting wus heid in Mr. Winlle'a house (formerly the Mangnpai Hotel), for the purpose of raising funds for feneing-in the cemetery near the Presbyterian Church. The trays were supplied by those v.-iu have already friends interred there. Notwithstanding the heavy showers of rain which fell just at, the time appointed (I o'c'ocU), an.! wliich prevented several from attending, there w.is a goodly number present.—A fur tea, the public nnvtiug was presided over by Mr. Hewlett, who, in a very able address, explained the word "Cemetery," and gave an historical ;u: -omit of the diil'erent ancient aid modern mo us of interment.—Joseph I'uil, E-q., .1.1'., W. Ormistou, Esq., J. P., JVlr. .M:ter, ,if .'.tauugakaramea, and others, severally :i.Mivs.s<.'d the audience. At intervals, bctneeu liiu speakers, the Misses Hewlett enlivened the meeting by performing on the harmonium, and singing I several select pieces, givingas usu.d'-onsUerable j pleasure to the audience, and contributing largely to tho enjoyment of the evening.— There is a great ileal of dis.-alisiUilijn in the Mangnpai Highway District, in reference to tho small amount of money given by the Provincial Government. About four tiling the , amount has been given to i.u adjoining High- , way District which has not collected nearly so much as lias been collected in Mang:ip;ii, and j the other district at the same time using 1 our ivuds in getting to tho landing- j plucc. it is ditlicult to assign any reason for j such partiality being shown between two ait- j joining districts.—A public school has been i taught in the Presbyterian Church for the last nine months ; 20 children are attending | at present, and although I understand that ! several applications have been made to the j Central Board of Education for aid, no such j aid h.s been granted, and it is to be feared j this district will lose the services of a valuable I teacher (who is giving every satisfaction) for | want of such aid. —[Correspondent.] |
