IN THE PRESS—TO BE PUBLISHED EARLY IN MARCH, IN CROWN QUARTO, A CENTENARY EDITION OF CAPT. COOK'S DESCRIPTION OF NEW ZEALAND, 100 YEAKS AGO; With Notes Anecdotes, Reminiscences, &c, on the History, Topography, Natural History, and Ethnology, to illustrate Cook's Narrative. Maps and Views showing the progress of the Discovery of New Zealand and the changes that have taken place in the country. EDITED BY MAJOR CHAS. HEAPHY, V.C. TAMES COOK, the celebrated navigator, tl was the first European who set foot on New Zealand; he landed on the east side of Turanganui River, in Poverty Bay, Bth October, 1769 ; thence he sailed along the East Coast, across the Bay of Plenty, round Cape Colvilie, up the Gulf and River Thames ; then north, round North Cape, along the West Coast, through Cook Strait, to Queen Charlotte's Sourd. He then sailed through the Strait, along the East Coast of the Middle Island, round the South Cape, and returned along the West Coast to Queen Charlotte's Sound again. Captain Cook left New Zealand on 31st March, 1770, having spent six months on the coast; but although he re-visited tbe TEttHA AtTSTRALIS ISCOGXITA four times, it was only dining the first visit that he sailed all round and described the country—its inhabitants and productions. It is now one hundred years since Captain Cook landed and took possession of these Islands, yet not one of the many elaborate and voluminous accounts of (he country and its inhabitants that have been published can be i compared to that which he wrote ; in fact the i best subsequent works are but supplementary I to his simple yet compendious and accurate description. The forthcoming publication has been compiled from the earliest edition of "Cook's "Voyages,"—the narrative being transcribed verbatim —explained and amplified by notes and appendixes, bringing to bear the observations and experiences of the principal writers and travellers of more recent times. Such an account of the changes in the country, physically and politically, that have taken place during the past century cannot fail to be most interesting to the lovers of science and history, aud it is hoped may also assist in recording the customs of a race that is fast diminishing, and which has already lost many of its peculiar characteristics. The several places of which Cook gave illustrations will be shown by photographs or d awings. The work, which is inte ded to form a first-class gift book, will be edited, illustrated, printed, and bound in Auckland. Price, to subscribers before publication, 10s. 6d. Non-subscribers, 15s. GEO. T. CHAPMAN, PUBLISHER, Auckland, New Zealand.
