NnW Zealand Hebalt> Office.. Thursday evening, February 17The events of the month have not besn encouraging to importers: trade has been doll, and prices have ruled low, whilst efforts to effect sales of any magnitude l.ave met with refusal from the retailers, who prefer in the present state of the markoc to purchase only for immediate requirements. Still it is satisfactory to note that the number of forced sales by auction lias been greatly diminished, and although transactions have been on a more limited scale, it is fair to assume that they havo been for bona fide trade requirements.

The month has been rather prolific of failures, more so than any similar period dui-.'ng the list two years, it should be bone in mind, however, that the number docs not i lelude any one firm of standing in Auckland, but consists of persons who h'id acquired a fjoiporavy position through the opening of the Thames Goldfield, or others who, having instituted cutting prices, had Eyatematicu'ly sold their gooils below cos... As a rule, we believe, engagements have been promptly met, and tho prevailing depression appears to be attiibutable to a natural reaction after the scrip mania, which exercised bo much influence a few months age, rather than to any fulling off in the resources of the province. A large aid bloody busings: has been dono in our local products; somewhat extreme prices were paid for guvn and flax during Junuary. Of late indeed, the seller on the spot has done better than the shipper cau hope to do, competition amongst local buyers having caused prices to rise proportionately higher thai they had in the English market , ', great as the auvaneo there hnd undoubtedly been. Advices received by last mail, however, have caused a decline in buying rates. Good clean bard gum is now worth £35 to £40 ; iho supply is coming iu freely. Flax is -n demand, and at Mr. A. Buckland"'s lust sale fetched within £1 per ton of previous rates. Good, well-drcssrd parcels may bo quoted at £28 per ton, but many of our manufacturers requj-c to take more care in dressing and sorting this staple—points much noticed by English buye.-s. Wo noto Hint the price of kiiuri timber has slightly declined ; a good assortment of marketablo stuff* may now he bought at the mills nt 9* 6d to 10s per 100 superficial feot; for a cargo of full cut, heavy timber, an advance would, however bo required. Potatoi-s are plentiful at £3 10s to £4 per ton. Onions, £7 lo £0. Corned butler, 8d to Od. Colonial cheese, 7d to Bd. Eggs, Is 6d per dozen. We refer our readers to the accompanying list of prices current, corrected to date. Stocks of most articles are sufficient for present requirements; an active enquiry for some lines exists however. Halt beef is scarce., and if of good quality, saleable at £4, 10s per tierce. Enir'-'sh bacon, and cheese are also scarce, but at tlio prices ruling in the homo markets, it is not probable that shipments would pay. Sardines, sulmon, American lobsters and brooms aro wanted, and moderate trade parcels would be saleable at oui- quotations. Flour continues low, and as stocks aro by no means light, and tho tenor of Australian advices not favorable to holders an early advance does not seem probable. The amount of our exports lias been well maintained. Three vessels have sailed for London during the month with full cargoes of gum, wool, flux, oil, &c. The ships Helens lee, and City of Auckland aro now on tho berths and from the quantity of cargo offering, will, no doubt, leave with despatch.
